Hi there! I’m Mala Srivastava, a Chikankari artist and entrepreneur from the lanes of Old Lucknow. My story is one of curiosity, resilience, and a love for the intricate art of Chikankari embroidery.
Growing up in the bylanes where this craft flourished, I was always fascinated by the delicate patterns and the skilled hands that created them. However, my path initially took me down a different road – that of a UPPSC aspirant, driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to crack prestigious government exams.
While the exam preparations fueled my inquisitive nature, they also instilled in me a realization – I wanted to breathe new life into the age-old art of Chikankari and share its beauty with the world. Thus, two years ago, I embarked on a journey to create unique Chikankari designs that would resonate with the modern fashion-conscious generation.

As the first entrepreneur in my family, I embarked on this journey alone, facing numerous challenges without any prior guidance. From sourcing materials to finding customers and promoting my work, I had to navigate every aspect of starting a business independently.
However, my rigorous exam preparations instilled in me a tenacious spirit and unwavering determination, which proved invaluable in overcoming the obstacles I encountered along the way.
And so, I came across Instagram that became my ally, connecting me with a world of potential customers and fellow artisans. Strangers became admirers, appreciating my designs and providing a much-needed boost of recognition. The platform also kept me informed about the latest exhibitions and trends in the industry.
While building my venture, I faced another battle – one against my own physical limitations. Born with health issues that require me to wear a caliper to walk, I’ve encountered related challenges day by day. But my motto has always been “never give up, and always remain hopeful.”
As the saying goes, “If you don’t have the courage to run, walk; and if you can’t walk, crawl.” I’ve chosen to crawl towards my dreams, doing what’s best for me, one stitch at a time.
