Achieving My Dream of Financial Independence as a Mom

As far back as I can remember, being financially independent through my own business was a dream I held close to my heart. After years working in the IT industry, I finally decided to take the leap and quit my job to chase this long-held aspiration. However, the road to making this dream a reality was filled with obstacles that tested my resilience.

It all started when I created a YouTube channel called “Stay Gorgeous” (@staygorgeous) to share my passion for hair care, hairstyling, and a lifestyle focused on inner and outer beauty. As I posted videos sharing my hair care routines using homemade herbal oils and treatments, the overwhelming comments poured in from viewers asking about my regimen and if they could purchase the hair oil I made myself using over 50 rare herbal ingredients.

That’s when I decided to turn this interest into a business and launch my own line of hair care and skin care products made from natural, time-tested ingredients. With the encouragement of my family, especially my husband, I took the first step – but little did I know about the challenges that lay ahead.

My mother motivates me, and my twin sister is my best friend through good and bad times. I lost my father in 7th grade, but my brother has been a supportive father figure ever since. My husband helps me in all aspects – buying materials, making products, packing, shipping orders. He motivates me, and we work together beautifully.

One of the biggest obstacles I faced was sourcing some of the rare herbs and botanicals that only grow in remote hill regions across the country. With limited financial resources, traveling to these areas for procurement was difficult. I spent months researching suppliers and developing partnerships with rural collectors and farmers to ensure a steady supply chain.

As a new mom who had just given birth to my second child, finding the time and energy to build the business while caring for my newborn was chronically tough. There were many sleepless nights invested into formulating products, managing inventory, and fulfilling orders. Continually balancing mom duties with work responsibilities was an immense struggle that put me under immense physical, mental and emotional strain.

Through all the trials and tough times, what kept me going was the strength that motherhood gave me, the unwavering belief of my loved ones, and the satisfaction of receiving messages from happy customers saying how my products changed their lives. Their stories only reaffirmed my conviction in my work.

The business found its feet, primarily growing through Instagram where most of my orders came from. Managing work and family became an art I perfected over time. This endeavor allowed me to be financially independent while being present for my kids, aging parents, and husband as a doting mom, daughter and supportive life partner.

Nothing compares to the sense of achievement that comes from overcoming obstacles to build something you truly own from the ground up. I hope by sharing the challenges in my journey, it inspires other mothers to persevere through their own hardships and not give up on their entrepreneurial dreams. With an unshakable resolve, and a nurturing support system, you can overcome any obstacle!
